I can't stop pondering: What is the true meaning of giving?
If someone were to stop me on the street and do a survey on how i would define the "true meaning of giving", i would probably say: "Sacrificing something i treasure for someone else".
But, as the surveyor go around asking different people on the same crowded road, he could get rather different definitions:
"Doing an act that would make someone very happy"
"Taking what extra i have to buy something for someone"
"How Jesus died on the cross for us"
"Giving something without asking for anything in return"
Yes, and this list is non-exhaustive. And honestly, there isn't a right or wrong answer in any of those definitions. It's like one of those GP essays, if you debate it well, it works.
So out of curiosity sake, i looked out the dictionary definitions of these words :
Give - to present voluntary, without compensation OR to hand to someone
Sacrifice - to surrender something highly valued for the sake of one considered to have a higher value.
So, from these two definitions, a line is drawn. What exactly is giving then? My latest epiphany: You give differently to different people for different purposes.
Yes, for example: we all chip in $10 for a birthday present for a classmate. So, we voluntarily gave $10 of our pocket money to bless this person.
OR it could be
You sacrifice $1000 of your hard earnt money to bless your parents with a holiday overseas. Yes, $1000 is alot of money but hey, i am making my parents happy.
Both acts, are acts of giving.
So, when it comes to this topic, there really isn't a conclusion we can come to. So, why did i spend this whole time typing a bunch of crap?
Because sometimes, we just gotta learn to accept that different people have different attitude towards life. Yes, perhaps it's true, it's the diversity among us that makes this world beautiful.
